Viagra-Like Ingredient Found in Coffee Product Part of Reason for Recall

The Food and Drug Administration has discovered a number of undeclared ingredients in an instant coffee mix – one of which will likely turn some heads.

That undeclared ingredient is desmethyl carbodenafil, which is similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. The product also includes undeclared milk.

In light of the undeclared ingredients, Grand Prairie, Tex.-based Bestherbs Coffee LLC is now voluntarily recalling all its 13 gram-packs of New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee. The product was distributed from July 2014 through June 2016.

The ingredient in question could "interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, such as nitroglycerin, and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels," according to a news release. Typical nitrates consumers include men who have conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure or heart disease.

The company is telling its customers about the recall by phone, and there haven't been any reports of illnesses yet. Product recalls are relatively common in the U.S., with company after company taking products off shelves often as a precautionary measure.

The FDA has had to previously recall coffee with this ingredient, including Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee last year and Caverlo Natural Herbal Coffee just this May, The Washington Post reports.

Consumers are being advised to get rid of the product and discontinue use, as well as talk to their doctor. They should send it to Bestherbs Coffee LLC, 4250 Claremont Dr, Grand Priarie, TX 75052, and they will receive reimbursement for both postage as well as the product.
